Top HITMC Articles of 2021

Four of the top five most-read articles on HITMC.com in 2021 were educational pieces that shared marketing strategies and tactics. Only one was an opinion piece. This isn’t surprising given how the HITMC Community is all about helping each other and sharing best practices.

2021 Summary

As we get close to the end of the year, we thought it would be fun to go back and see which articles and videos we posted in 2021 were the most read/viewed. The results were not surprising and were completely aligned with the ethos of the community:

  • Articles that provided helpful tactics or how-to’s were the most popular
  • Videos that celebrated the success of members of the HITMC community were the most watched
  • Articles about events were very popular
  • Articles about branding, ABM and marketing automation were not as popular
  • The Medigy HITMC Awards page was by far the most visited page on HITMC.com

Yes, HIMSS21 Was Worth Attending
Given all the uncertainty around in-person events in 2021, it wasn’t surprising to see this article in the top 5. People were curious to know how the grand dame of Health IT conferences fared this year. Spoiler Alert: it was smaller than normal (gasp!)

Brevity Works, Product Briefings Don’t: An Analysis of HIMSS21 PR Pitches
This was my favorite article to write…mostly because I not only got to share some behind-the-scenes data with the HITMC Community, but I also got to indulge my inner data analyst. I honestly didn’t realize until after this piece was published

5 Keys to a Great 30-60-90 Day Marketing Plan
This piece was written during a week when we learned that 5 members of the HITMC Community had landed new marketing leadership roles. A solid good 30-60-90 plan is key to having a great start which is so important when working with a new team.

Virtual Events Don’t Have to Suck
After being frustrated by yet another disappointing online event experience, I wrote this piece as a way to vent. Thankfully as the year went on, many organizers made concerted efforts to make their online events less like lectures and more engaging. I’m still looking for a good example of a hands-on virtual session.

Top Articles – Guest Authors
The following were the top 5 articles in 2021, authored by a guest.

Why You Should Fire Your Agency Every 90-days by healthlaunchpad
The headline on this article was provocative and it generated a lot of feedback. Many people disagreed with the approach put forward by Adam Turinas, but others thought it was a prudent way to work with agencies. Read the article and decide which side you fall on.

Hotels and Healthcare – Alliteration Isn’t the Only Thing They Have in Common by Burt Rosen
Burt’s session at the last Virtual HITMC event of 2021 was excellent. His summary article was just as good. It was full of useful tips including my favorite: “Everything Communicates”. You have to check it out.

Benchmarking Your Email Results: What 2020 Taught Us About Email by emfluence
Email remains one of the most popular and effective ways for marketers to generate leads and communicate with an audience. It’s no surprise that this wonderful article which highlighted trends from hundreds of thousands of sent emails was one of the most popular in 2021. Tip #3 resonated with me: Personalize, personalize, personalize.

7 Steps to a Successful Virtual Brand Launch by Clarity Quest
This was the only brand article to land in the top 5 of 2021. Written by Christine Slocumb, this article highlighted practical things that marketers should be doing when launching a new brand like: Create the best website you can afford and start content generation early.

When it Comes to Communications, Go Broad or Go Home by FINN Partners
What drew me into this article was the “Go Broad or Go Home” part. What a perfect slogan for a communication strategy. Sue Drew knocked it out of the park with her suggestion: Create Surround-Sound Awareness Through a Mix of Media.

Top Videos
The following were the most watched HITMC videos in 2021.

Award Winner Pam Landis: Bringing Health IT, Communications & Operations Together
I always enjoy speaking with Pam. She is so knowledgeable and so down-to-earth. This interview with her was one of the most watched videos in 2021. The part where she shares how she saw a tweet from Grace Cordovano with suggestions on how their COVID vaccination process could be improved is social media gold!

Award Winner Matt DiVenere: Creating a Safe Haven for the Senior Community
You can tell when two people on an interview are truly enjoying their conversation. That’s exactly what you’ll see when Matt speaks with Brittany about his work and what winning a 2021 Medigy HITMC Award meant to him.

Joy Rios: Award Winning Health IT Podcast – HIT Like a Girl
Joy is a force of nature and she is always smiling, always positive. That comes through clearly in this interview with Brittany about her award winning HIT Like a Girl podcast. You have to watch this video to hear who Joy’s bucket-list guest would be!

Marketer of the Year Winner: Jared Johnson on Breaking Down Silos & Not Having All the Answers
Jared is awesome. Period. Full stop. He’s funny, smart, thoughtful, and always willing to share knowledge. He has this special ability to connect with audiences, which came through in spades in this video interview. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean.

Award Winning Campaign: Message in the Music, Spreading Love, Not COVID
Hip Hop Public Health was the most unique organization we met in 2021. Winners of the Medigy HITMC Award for Best COVID Public Awareness Campaign, HHPH used a combination of music, famous musicians, and social media to get the word out about handwashing, masking, and staying safe in a COVID world. This interview gave a behind-the-scenes look at their work.
